Bobbi Lu is het alter ego van Lucy Ryan (27), een begenadigde Britse die
klassieke pianomelodieën clasht met diepe bass synths, detuned autotune
en inventieve pophooks. Invloeden reiken van FKA Twigs en Grimes tot
Radiohead en Caroline Polachek.
Ryan groeide op in Abingdon bij Oxford - (niet) toevallig ook de plek waar
het allemaal begon voor Radiohead - in Engeland, maar belandde enkele
jaren geleden in Brugge. Ze begon er haar eigen nummers te schrijven,
een intrigerende combinatie van klassieke piano, disruptieve elektronica
en gevatte punchlines – én te spelen.
Ook al heeft Bobbi Lu nog maar een handvol optredens op haar teller
staan, met haar krachtige performance liet ze wel al een diepe indruk na.
Haar derde show ooit was afgelopen december op het podium- en
kansenparcours Sound Track van vi.be, waar ze als een van de laureaten
in de voetsporen trad van onder anderen labelgenote Meskerem Mees.
Stilzitten staat de komende maanden niet in de agenda bij Bobbi Lu: ze
werkt aan nieuwe muziek en gaat uitgebreid spelen in binnen- én
buitenland, onder meer in het voorprogramma van Sylvie Kreusch en The
Haunted Youth. Eentje om in de gaten te houden.

Bobbi Lu is the moniker of 27-year-old Lucy Ryan, who likes to crash the
piano with deep bass synths and detuned autotune. Influences range from
FKA Twigs to Grimes and Radiohead and Caroline Polachek.
Originally from Abingdon, Oxfordshire (where, as it happens, Radiohead
formed back in 1985) in England, Ryan moved to Bruges a couple of years
ago. She started writing and playing her own songs, an intriguing
combination of piano, delightfully dark electronica and clever punchlines.
As Bobbi Lu, Ryan’s only done a handful of gigs so far, but she’s already
made an impression with her powerful performance. Her third show ever
was at the Sound Track contest for upcoming talents last December, where
she came out a winner, following in the footsteps of, a.o., fellow label artist
Meskerem Mees.
Keep an eye out for Bobbi Lu, she won’t be sitting around doing nothing in
the months to come. She’s writing lots of new music and will be touring
extensively, including support slots for Sylvie Kreusch and The Haunted
Youth, both in Belgium and abroad.
