Shoko Igarashi werd geboren in Japan en zette in Tokyo haar eerste professionele muzikale stappen. Na haar studies aan het Berklee College of Music in Boston en een tussenstop in New York belandde ze in 2018 in Brussel, waar ze haar partner en pianist Casimir Liberski leerde kennen en met wie ze de band Maniac Maison oprichtte.
Hoewel haar achtergrond in de traditionele jazz ligt, experimenteert ze als muzikante en componiste de voorbije jaren vooral met elektronica en combineert ze dit met invloeden die ze haalt uit bands als Sly & The Family Stone, Earth Wind & Fire, Japanse city pop, 70s jazz fusion en de anime filmmuziek waarmee ze opgroeide.

Shoko Igarashi grandit dans la campagne japonaise de Yamagata, où elle commence à jouer du saxophone dès son plus jeune âge. En passant par Tokyo, Boston et Brooklyn, elle s’installe à Bruxelles en 2018 pour y fonder le groupe Maniac Maison avec son partenaire, le pianiste Casimir Liberski, et le guitariste Lucien Fraipont (Robbing Millions).
Dans son travail solo, Shoko Igarashi rassemble diverses influences : jazz fusion des années 70, pop urbaine japonaise, musiques de films d’animation et psychédélisme funky à la Earth Wind & Fire et Sly & the Family Stone. Son électronique colorée convient aussi bien aux connaisseurs qu’à l’easy listening et aux soirées d’été en bonne compagnie.

Shoko Igarashi was born in 1991 in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. An accomplished tenor saxophonist, she is also a versatile flautist and plays alto and soprano saxophone fluently.
After beginning her musical career in Tokyo, she attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree of music. She then relocated to Brooklyn, New York where she began regularly performing live alongside innumerable talented jazz musicians. In 2018, she moved to Brussels, Belgium and founded the group Maniac Maison with her partner, pianist Casimir Liberski, and guitarist Lucien Fraipont.
Since 2018, Shoko has written and compiled a series of well-crafted, colourful electronic songs curating diverse influences such as Sly & the Family Stone, Earth Wind & Fire, Japanese City-Pop, ’70s jazz fusion, and the anime film music that she grew up learning to play. Her nimble and seamless assembly of these very different elements into her unique sound is astonishingly natural.
